Why we don't use ONLY naturals in our candles?

It's not uncommon for many to regard synthetics as inferior to natural ingredients. Many associate synthetics with being harmful and full of chemicals. However, few know that naturals could also be harmful, as nature uses its own defenses to protect itself. Synthetics allow modern perfumery to create scents that are not found in nature, pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation in a more sustainable manner.

For instance, natural fig is forbidden for use in perfumery due to its extreme phototoxicity. Phototoxicity is a reaction that occurs when certain substances, often natural compounds, react with sunlight and UV radiation, causing skin irritation, burns, or other adverse effects. Many other natural citrus ingredients like bergamot and lemon are also phototoxic if their furocoumarin content is not removed. So, fig fragrances you find in stores, like the iconic Diptyque Philosykos, are most likely crafted with a combination of synthetics and naturals (not derived from fig itself), with safety being one of the highest priorities.

You may not know that it takes 4 tons of rose petals to obtain 1 kg of pure rose essential oil, and double the amount for making rose absolute. One of our favorite scents, Sandalwood, takes 15 years to reach fruition. The longer the tree grows, the richer and more complex the scent it produces. Due to the extremely high demand for Indian Sandalwood, illegal and criminal gangs have taken advantage of it. Imagine the sustainability challenges if only naturals were used.

Don't get us wrong. We have a deep appreciation for natural ingredients, and they will continue to hold a special place in the world of perfumery. They evoke a sense of authenticity and a connection to nature that cannot be replicated. Natural ingredients, such as flowers, fruits, and spices, have been used in perfumery for centuries, and their timeless appeal and complexity will remain unmatched.

Kensla Candles

Initially, we held the same perception as many others, believing that naturals are the best choice for candles. However, as we gained knowledge about raw materials, we discovered that only natural ingredients can make candles burn faster and produce more black smoke. Some naturals even contain CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic) substances that are truly harmful when used in candles.

At Kensla Studio, our fragrances are crafted with the best of both worlds, combining the precision of synthetics with the authenticity of natural ingredients. It is a delicate balance, much like composing a symphony of aromas, where each note plays a crucial role in the overall composition.
